Description: The podcast recounts the story of British journalist Dom Phillips and activist and Indigenous advocate Bruno Pereira, who were murdered in June 2022 while investigating the crisis in the Amazon. Phillips sought to tell stories of resistance, interviewing Chief Biraci Nixiwaka, a key figure in the Indigenous movement. After his death, other journalists took up his mission to learn about the Yawanawá people’s struggle against extractivist policies. The podcast examines the political context under Jair Bolsonaro and how it has shaped Amazon conservation policies, while also exploring stories of Indigenous resistance in the face of extractive threats.

Teaching ideas: Reflect on issues of human rights and ecology, especially in relation to Indigenous peoples and their struggles against the exploitation of the Amazon. Students may develop a short critical essay on extractivist policies, while being introduced to vocabulary related to ecology and politics, as well as the use of the subjunctive to express wishes, doubts, or hypotheses in contexts of social and environmental change.
